Community leaders, the Mayor of Omaha, members of the Board of Directors, staff and the youth being served all gathered together on July 15, 2009, to celebrate the official grand opening of the Combs Learning Center. Donor Carol Combs, Mayor Jim Suttle, and youth from the program – Abbey, Rosie and Tyler – cut the ribbon and opened the entrance to the new facility.
The 4,000-square-foot center will provide training classrooms, counseling rooms and office space for the Home’s Independent Living Program, designed to help young adults transition from foster care, residential care settings and homeless situations into supported independent living arrangements. The Combs Learning Center is located adjacent to Jacobs’ Place, two apartment buildings that provide housing for the Independent Living youth.
“The building allows us to provide all the necessary services in a single location.” said Darryl Summers, Program Manager. “We are very grateful for Ms. Combs’ generosity.”
“I’m just looking forward to it [the center] being put to use” said Carol. “This is quite a thrill.” Ms. Combs gandfather, Tinley L. Combs, was the founder and first president of the Home from 1920 until his death in 1941.
